How to resolve IP Address to DNS hostname

I have searched and found two entries which are either outdated or inconclusive.

Is there a way to switch on ReverseDNS on IP Addresses?

I’d love to see the option display a visitor’s hostname in addition to or instead of IP address in the visitor log and live visitor widget. All it would take would be a call to gethostbyaddr($ip_address) in the php code… although I suppose an additional column in the DB to store the result would also be required.
