Visitor tracking opt out

Hi Friends,
Some time ago, I created a “Privacy Policy” page for my sites. I had found a short bit of code (iframe) which provided a checkbox for them to opt out.

I haven’t looked at that page in a while, and just found that section of the page is blank. I went to look for that content where I originally found it in piwik, but I can’t seem to find it.

Is it no longer possible for visitors to opt out of tracking? If so, how to do it now?

Thanks

Edit - Sorry, I forgot to say. I’m still using version 2.15. Not a good time for me to upgrade, but I will soon.

I don’t know whether it is the same in version 2.15 but from version 3 on (I haven’t used earlier versions of Piwik) there is a function under settings -> privacy ->offer do not follow me…
Another thing you could do is try to look up the previous forum post in the archive however it will probably be outdated.

Hi,
The opt out iframe still exists and is the best solution for your problem.
Can you check the javascript console for errors to see why the iframe is not loading. Is it possible that you are trying to embed a non https iframe in an https site?

@PRHC you are talking about another feature. By default piwik ignores all tracking data from users who have do not track enabled in their browser.

Oohh, maybe that’s it. My host switched to https a few months ago. All I would need to do is add the “s” to the url, right?

If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to ask you how to find the javascript console. I’ve never even heard of that.

I can’t get to my site at the moment (some hosting issue - in the middle of moving to a new host). But as soon as I get back in, I’ll try adding the “s”.

Thank you very much

Hi,

That will be the reason. A secure (HTTPS) page can only include other secure files as it would undermine the security otherwise.

All I would need to do is add the “s” to the url, right?

Yes, but this will only work when your piwik instance is also reachable via HTTPS (which I would really recommend).

If you press F12 while browsing your website, you can open your browser’s developer tools. There you can see which requests fail and why and can check if there are any errors in the console.

Ok, I found the Inspector thing (Firefox), but I’m going to need more info about how to use it. (Like for example, it’s showing me one place, but how do I move to the next place it finds. Do I have to visit every single page?) I guess I should go to Ff support, to learn more about it?

Piwik’s url is https, but I’m not sure if that’s what you mean about being reachable by https.

Adding the s did replace the opt out controls. But now I realize there are a ton of places on the site where I’ll need to add the s. You’d think my host would have mentioned that to me. Sounds like it was the right decision to move to a new host, which I just completed today!

Anyway, thanks for your help

Hi,

If you want to you can paste the URL here or send me a private message.

Piwik’s url is https, but I’m not sure if that’s what you mean about being reachable by https.

For https to work you need a certificate for this domain. But it seems like it’s working.

Oh yes, there’s a certificate.

Thanks for your help! I’m looking into other areas which might have been affected by the change.
